Top 5 Golf Courses in Morocco

Morocco has been for a long time a well known and renowned by golf professionals and, at the same time, offers countless attractions around this sport, such as culture, spas, adventure, etc. Located at an average 3 hours flight from the main European capitals, Morocco is a perfect destination for golfers, with excellent world-class facilities and a yearly average of 300 days of sun. Here is a list of the country's best golf courses.

Tangiers Royal Club

This is the country's oldest golf course, inaugurated in 1914 and redesigned by the English architects Cotton y Penninck in 1967, who gave the course an obvious Anglo-Saxon character. It is located less than 2 miles from the coastal city of Tangiers, in North Morocco, on green hills that offer a splendid view over the roof of the white city.

The 18-holes course has an almost alpine character, since it winds around the big fir, cypress and eucalyptus forest, and includes innumerable ascents and slopes. It is an excellent course for good golfers, who will no doubt enjoy greatly the abrupt ascents, the narrow descents and the common challenge of wind. Nonetheless, beginners and amateur golfers will also discover the joys and challenges of a course where it is impossible to get bored.

Cabo Negro Royal Club (Tetouan)

Behind the city of Tetouan and the summits of the Rif Mountains range, this 18-holes golf course was designed in an almost-wild setting by Hawtree & Sons and revise by Cabell B. Robinson. The design of the course, with a natural round, fits the purest British tradition and philosophy and offers wide fairways that hide the surprises to be found near the green, such as impenetrable and dense bushes...

The greens on the round are especially slow and drives are very demanding. The wind is also quite a challenge in this course located near the sea. One of the favourite holes for golfers is hole number 15, a magnificent par 5 crossed by two streams and where the last part of the round ascends towards a blind green.

Fez Royal Golf

The architect Cabell B. Robinson designed this course located some 10 miles from the city of Fez, in the middle of an impressive olive grove and with a spectacular view of the Middle Atlas Mountains. Its long fairways meander between the olive trees and undulate along the natural unevenness. The architect wanted to satisfy completely those golfers visiting this course by setting out ponds, trees, greens with different shapes and gigantic bunkers (one of them is 1.440 yrd²!).

The round's main characteristic is that it is packed with bunkers perfectly set out and which constitute a great many traps. Moreover, water obstacles are numerous and demanding, especially on the green of hole 3, flanked by water on both sides, and the dropping zones in holes 1, 3, 5, 9, 17 and 18, which makes this course a true jewel.

Royal Golf Dar Es Salam (Rabat)

This golf course is, without a doubt, a living legend of golf in Morocco and in the rest of the world. Listed among the 50 best golf courses in the world, its 45 holes delight golfers come from all corners of the planet and make it the largest course in Africa and the whole Arab world. The legendary Hassan II Trophy is held every year in this course, designed by Robert Trent Jones, where cypress trees, palm trees, eucalyptus, cork oaks, firs, ficus trees, banana trees, papyruses, mimosas and roses blossom and flourish spectacularly.

The setting is truly sensational, sprinkled with wild ducks, splendid rosebushes and Roman columns directly brought from the ruins of Volubilis, and whose par 73 testifies its power. Getting a score of less than par 70 is quite an exploit, a true prowess achieved only by a handful of chosen professionals. Some of its holes are legendary, as is hole 9, whose 188 yards must be played above enormous water lilies. Altogether, the course offers three outstanding rounds that will delight any golfer.
