Save Money on Your Barbados Vacation

While the beautiful white sands of Barbados are quite inviting, the prices to travel there are not so attractive. However, there are ways to skim any bill, this includes travel expenses.

Just south of St. Lucia, Barbados is a beautiful Caribbean getaway. Here are a few penny pinching tips to place that trip to Barbados within reach.

Travel off Season

One of the biggest tips in cutting travel costs is traveling during off seasons. The peak season in Barbados is December thru April. Hurricane season is June thru October. Keep both of these facts in mind when planning your getaway.

Barbados summers are known for temperatures in the mid 80's. Add to this mild temperature a slight breeze courtesy of the sea and cool clear waters and you have heaven.

Consider a condo or house rental

Although resorts and hotels are often advertised with breathtaking photos, rental properties offer the same breath taking view. Why spend an extra couple of hundreds just for the community swimming pools and the glitter and glamour? Two Bedroom villas can be found as low as $200 per night on vacation rental sites.

However, keep in mind, peak season guarantees higher rates. During these months, these same villas price about $400 a night. Although that price may make you flinch, it is still considerably lower than resort pricing during this season.

Picnic and prepare your own meals

Skip the restaurants. Why not try out local markets and prepare your own food? Fire up the grill on the patio of your villa and have a private meal with your travel mates.

Consider local drinks

While traveling we tend to let our hair down and party. As a result, our tab for our alcoholic beverages can add up quickly. Consider passing on vodka and wine and instead try out some local rum. Remember Barbados is rum country!

Caribbean Airlines

Small isn't necessarily a bad thing in the travel industry. In fact, for years I have seen a growing trend in my clients requesting smaller, more intimate hotels, namely boutique hotels. Whether or not Caribbean Airlines wants this title, I feel they do qualify as a boutique airline. The beauty of smaller companies is often more attention to detail, a lower staff to guest ratio, and overall more personalized service. Well, the Trinidad based Caribbean Airlines offers all of the above.

I don't usually take a stand on recommending one airline over another - honestly, at this point in time all the major players have disappointed me and my clients with last minute inconvenient schedule changes, fare hikes, and commission cuts. I am loyal to Air Jamaica - primarily from my own wonderful experiences of flying with them on over 50 occasions. But, the smaller Caribbean Airlines deserves attention too! Caribbean Airlines is available to book directly or through many wholesalers, including one of my favorites, Travel Impressions. Caribbean Airlines service the following islands: Antigua, Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Caracas, Guyana, and Surinam from Fort. Laurderale, Toronto, Miami, London, or New York.
Let me know if I can arrange your next
vacation with Caribbean Airlines!

The New Barbados

Barbados was named the World's number 1 hotspot for celebrities in 2007 and received the Caribbean's first, and only, Zagat rating in 2008; a recognition for superior hospitality. A 'Best of' guide was released this year, highlighting Barbados' most worthy attractions and serving as a manual to allow visitors the chance to wring a pure, satisfying experience from their next vacation.

If there is a predominant theme to the guide and, in turn, the island, it is the high level of diversity saturating the tiny (166 sq. miles) Caribbean island. New attractions breed a unique flavor throughout Barbados, while older and established testaments to its history are renovated and find new life in the flattering sentences of Zagat's guide. With so much to see and do, it would be virtually impossible to tackle its every recommendation. Below, in chocolate-sampler form, is an eclectic taste of the island.

The Lexy Piano Bar claims to be "sufystikated, elegantly-casual and air-conditioned". Cheesy pun aside, the new night spot boasts a swank slice of New York and provides a half show, half party, atmosphere that lasts until 2 in the morning. According to the Zagat guide, "Locals and visitors make requests and join in… mixed drinks, wine and champagne ensure that all inhibitions are banished."

To indulge on the island's famous flying fish and rum punch, visitors must make a stop at the newly renovated Oistins Fish Fry on Friday and Saturday evenings. The event is a popular forum to mix with the Barbados locals, eat rich seafood, and hear great music.

Hands-on dining presides over the Elbow Room, instituting a do-it-yourself experience where you "choose from a number of pre-seasoned meats—beef, chicken and fish—and then grill it yourself on hot lava stone.

The Arlington House Museum recently underwent an elaborate renovation. Reopening under a month ago, the 3-story building has become an interactive tribute to Barbados' history and culture. The ground floor, 'Speightstown Memories', gives insight to the early life of the island's township. The story of the island's colonization and sugar cane industry is found at 'Plantation Memories', on the second floor. And a talking pirate guides the third floor's 'Wharf Memories' exhibit, a tribute to Speightstown's former trades glory.

Barbados' most popular visitor attraction, Harrison's Cave, is once again open after a year's renovation. The newly improved cavern, a haven for crystallized limestone and stalactite and stalagmite formations, features six new wheelchair-accessible trams as well as a new ventilation, drainage, electrical, and lighting system. Other facilities have been added to the site, including interactive displays, a souvenir shop, and a snack bar.

The Zagat guide especially highlights Barbados' rich culture, namely cuisine, and natural attractions in colorful descriptions that leap from the page, tempting you to book that next departing flight. By receiving the Zagat approval, the future visitor can feel confident of their vacation to the island, knowing that there are no embellishments to the guide—that every vibrant adjective is authentic.

Best of Barbados Extended for Fall!

The Best of Barbados Special for 2008 has been extended for the fall. Book by August 1, 2008 for travel between October 1 and November 30, 2008. Why do I love Barbados? For everything equal parts civilized and equal parts wild, for funky beach bars and pulsating rhythms, for afternoon tea and moonlit swims, and for all the reasons detailed in this video below!

Best of Barbados is Back!

The Best of Barbados program is one of my favorite island promotions because the majority of hotels on the island participate! The program includes air discounts of $200 to $300/per person, the first or first and second night free at the hotel of your choice based on a 7 night stay, and free breakfast! Additionally, there are gift certificates for local restaurants and buy one get the second one half-price at most area activity providers! Book your travel by April 1, 2008 to take advantage of these great savings! Let the Caribbean Specialists with CaribbeanJourney.com plan your Barbados Vacation or book online for discount packages!

Taste of Barbados Festival

Food & Wine Magazine is sponsoring the 2007 Taste of Barbados Festival. This 10 day event is the national showcase of Barbados' fine cuisine and local culture. From rum-tastings to one-on-one prime time seating at celebrity chef's tables, the Taste offers something for everyone! Taking place October 11 to 14 at venues located across the island, the festival is not to be missed for any true Caribbean foodies! New this year is a "Farm to Table Tour" where you will follow your meal from harvest to preparation in the presence of a professional chef. While some events range in cost up to $500/per person, there are many complimentary events. Check the schedule for full details. Enjoy!
