Wet Sand - Use It - Love It

When we were in Jamaica last week, the sea was unusually rough from what we had experienced in the past. (Hence, the mention of the rouge wave in this article.) I mentioned this to our friend, and avid sailor, and he showed me a great website called WetSand.com. Use it to predict the wind speeds and surf elevation for your next trip! Great resource!

Jakes OFF ROAD Triathlon - Jamaica

Did you see this? Cool...

The didn't make it to the Olympics this year, but we still love them!

NOBU comes to Strawberry Hill, Jamaica

Love NOBU - Love Strawberry Hill

NOBU is one of those places that IS all it is cracked up to be. Everything you've heard is true. It is a sushi wonderland. The good people at NOBU are bringing their love to Strawberry Hill - one of the most enchanted hotels in the Caribbean. Set in the mystical Blue Mountains and overlooking the sparkling city of Kingston and the deep blue sea beyond, Strawberry Hill is a must. Read about my trip last year right here

If you can't make it to Jamaica - then try Nobu at the Atlantis on Paradise Island, Bahamas.

Reason #4356 Why I Love Jamaica

The luxurious Round Hill is home to many designer villas. After all, Ralph Lauren owns a home here and played a part in the decor of the common areas so the property is synonymous with classic island style. Surely to impress, is this lovely villa decorated by Meg Braff, featured in Coastal Living, and first spotted by Moi, right here. {her smart little remarks fill you with a "be here now" moment or two}

If ever you should lose me and wonder where I am... if only.

Sandals to discontinue management of Dunn's River Resort
Sandals and Sagicor Life Jamaica have decided to part ways. Sandals next July will cease managing the 256-room Sandals Dunn's River Hotel in Mammee Bay, St. Ann. The two companies issued a joint press release on the decision. Sagicor is actively seeking a hotelier to manage the property, whose official lease to Sandals ends on May 31. The announcement brings to nine the number of hotels being operated by Sandals in Jamaica under the Sandals and Beaches brands.

In local Jamaican press reports Sandals is denying that the move was made in response to the current economic situation by pointing out that the company recently acquired Emerald Bay in the Bahamas from Four Seasons. Sandals also cited other investments in existing properties, such as the new River Suites at Sandals Negril and Sandals Royal Caribbean. In addition, the company is constructing Sandals City in Kingston and renovating the Dragon Bay Resort in Portland. Located on Jamaica’s northern shores, the hotel has been in operation since 1959 and has undergone several name changes, modernizations and renovations subsequently. Sagicor purchased the hotel in 1989 and in 2006 invested $15 million in renovations.

“After 15 years of successful partnership and in an amicable arrangement, Sandals Resorts International has decided to terminate its lease with the owners of the Sandals Dunn’s River Villaggio Golf Resort & Spa property in Ocho Rios, Jamaica on May 31, 2010,” Sandals said. “Sandals Resorts International chooses an ownership strategy as a whole, and as such the Sandals Dunn’s River lease no longer fits our current business model. We continually strive to improve our products for consumers and therefore require the flexibility to implement changes without restrictions and to improve, upgrade and maintain our resort product on an ongoing basis. This was not possible under our current lease terms at Sandals Dunn’s River and was the guiding reason behind our decision.”

Guests scheduled to stay at Sandals Dunn’s River following July 31, 2010 will have the option to change their booking to any like accommodation at other Sandals Resorts in the Caribbean without penalty or change fees. Airline change fees may still apply if guests change to another destination or change travel dates. Call 866-498-3218 or visit Sandals Website.

Check out the Cheap-O Air Blog!

It's a fact. Most travel blogs out there today are simple tools for self-promotion of expiring rates and tourist traps. Sometimes my own blog falls into this category too... I'll admit. So imagine my surprise when I stumbled across a blog with a typical title but seriously quality content? Check out the Cheap-O Air Blog and this great post from Friday all about one of my favorite Jamaican dishes:

Jamaican Foodie Friday

"Jamaican food is truly a celebration of the diverse cultures we boast, along with a touch of novelty and innovation. The distinctiveness of our food and culture was contributed primarily by the Arawaks or Tainos- the earliest recorded inhabitants, The Europeans, The Africans-who came as slave laborers and The Indians and Chinese- who came as indentured servants. It’s no surprise our Motto is : ‘Out of many one People’..." read more here on their fantastic travel blog and be sure and check their main website for Cheap Flights!

Meet Sandals & Beaches Resorts Culinary Consultant

I just returned from a fantastic trip to Beaches Turks & Caicos. There are plenty of new upgrades at the resort, including a higher-end feel to many of the menus and cuisine quality. When I inquired as to why, I learned that Sandals & Beaches Resorts employs a famous Culinary Consultant.

Walter Staib is the Culinary Ambassador to Sandals & Beaches Resorts and founder of the Caribbean Culinary Federation. How cool is that? Being one that will do almost anything for a fine meal, I immediately researched Mr. Staib... a name I had heard, but could not place. Mr. Staib has had a long career in hospitality cuisine, consulting for many of the worlds finest hotels and restaurants. He is has contributed to many cook books and made appearances on the Food Network. Read more about him here and book your next culinary vacation to Sandals or Beaches Resorts!

Updates from Jamaica

I spent last evening at a dinner hosted by The Jamaican Tourist Board - you know, the folks responsible for the groovy commercials and catchy tagline "Once You Go, You know.". Yes, it was lively, colorful, and delicious... a little taste of the island in Atlanta. Just when I thought there was nothing more I could possibly learn about this island I have visited oh so many times... there is. Below are the updates and facts I found most interesting:
  • Jamaica welcomes over 3 Million tourists EVERY year!
  • 75% of all visitors to Jamaica are booked through Travel Agents.
  • Due to improved roads, it only takes 1 HOUR to get from the airport in Montego Bay to Negril.
  • Due to the same road improvements, it only takes 1 HOUR & 20 mins to get to Ocho Rios from the airport.
  • However, due to current improvements in Montego Bay town, avoid arriving at rush hour or you will add 45 minutes to your trip simply trying to get out of town. This improvement will be completed in December '09.
  • JetBlue is adding nonstop service to Montego Bay from Orlando in January.
  • AirTran is adding nonstop service to Montego Bay from Atlanta in February.
The only fact I learned that I am NOT happy to hear is the increase in departure tax. As of today, October 1 2009, the departure tax for the island of Jamaica is now $20/per person. This is a jump from $11. You can read more about this here.

Jamaica & A Villa by the Sea....

A true villa vacation is one that comes with a staff included. A staff that considers this villa their own. They lovingly care for the property with tender touches...
You arrive to warm, smiling faces and huge bear hugs... followed by cool drinks and a light snack served poolside while you take in the view. Oh how this reception will wash away the weariness of travel and any effects from changing climates.

The butler quickly unpacks your suitcase and whips up another fruity concoction... at the bar... on the verandah... overlooking the sea. Just sit.

Dinner the first night is always a traditional Jamaican roast chicken dinner with all the typical tropical sides... rice & peas (they're really beans), fried sweet plantain, and a veggie. Dessert is indulgent... chocolate rum cake, pineapple upside down cake or maybe rum raisin ice cream. The wine will flow alongside the conversation and soon sleep will whisper in your ears and you will retire... right here:Your first breakfast could be banana pancakes. Fluffy savory batter surrounding freshly picked pieces of banana... hot from the griddle and dripping with butter. The fruit plate is equally enticing... long strips of papaya holding tiny wedges of lime for squeezing, cubes of rich mango waiting to melt in your mouth, fresh oranges - huge - easily the size of your palm.

Sip coffee - Blue Mountain - thick and woodsy and only perfect with a dash of cream and a heaping spoonful of sugar... then gaze. Let your eyes land on the housekeeper as she places hot fluffy towels on the chaises by the pool... all rolled up and waiting.

Look past and see the sea. No words. It just is - perfect - and alive - all its own.

Back at the table and more conversation with travel companions who slept as soundly as you in a room like this:
What to do first?

A swim. Then it is lunch by the sea... and more swimming.

The staff spends their day chasing dust bunnies out of the house, pressing your laundry, and stirring the pots with tonight's dinner. All while humming a little diddy.

From the pool, if your lucky, you can hear this humming.

Dinner the second night is full of laughter enjoyed while sharing Pumpkin Soup, Fettuccine with Ginger Grilled Lobster in Olive Oil and Fresh Tomatoes, and Rum Apple Crepes.

Then its off to bed again. Repeat this scenario 5-6 times and it was time to fly home. This trip could be all yours. Just let me know when you want to go!
