The Best of the Beach - Runaway Bay, Jamaica

Puerto Rico's {New} Ad Campaign Goes Vintage
From the NY Times {12.3.2009}
"The campaign is for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, which made waves in the 1950s with print ads by Ogilvy & Mather that presented beautiful scenes shot by a 26-year-old photographer named Elliott Erwitt."
"To be sure, the new campaign does acknowledge the change in attention spans in the last five decades. There are 107 words of text in one ad from the new campaign, compared with 217 in an ad from the original campaign that appeared in 1958.
And the new campaign reflects other changes since the days that the real-life versions of Don Draper and the other “Mad Men” strode Madison Avenue."

This week's news images showing the aftermath of the terrible Earthquake are for many people, the first images they have seen of Haiti. Yet, Haiti is as lovely as any other Caribbean island only with a fledgling tourism sector. I hope you will keep these images in mind and one day visit Haiti to see all the splendor firsthand.

Haiti is a rich and colorful dive destination. Recreational dives are minimal in the area and the sea life is flourishing:
Oxfam International is a non-governmental consortia of agencies working together to help poverty worldwide. They immediately launched a Haiti Earthquake campaign and are in need of donations.
Not all beaches in Haiti are deserted crescents of paradise. Welcome to the Barefoot Beach Bar at Labadee Beach:
Doctors without Borders was already active in Haiti before the earthquake. They operate multiple hospitals on the island, all of which have been flattened. Many of their own staff are unaccounted for and yet they have already sprung into action setting up clinics to help the injured. Donate here.

Grace Bay Beach is rightfully listed on most 'Top 10 Beaches' lists from every major travel magazine and publication. It IS that fantastic! Sugary white sand and crystal clear water...

The fun doesn't stop after dark. On most nights you'll find glowing musicians joining Elmo & crew in a parade. The mix of the beat and sea breeze is intoxicating...
The parades are complete with beautiful, larger than life, marionette style puppets...
Club Liquid is a really cool new addition. They have teen and adult hours so every has a chance to let loose and have some fun...

Once upon a time… long before pillow menus and linens with thread counts were of any importance to me, I lived here… the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica. 6 glorious months without a care in the world in a place trapped in time. I was here 12 years ago, before the digital camera age so I don’t have many of my own photos to share.
