The Sleepy Town Of England

The town of Market Rasen was once described by Charles Dickens as the 'sleepiest town in England'. With a population of 3,200 people this village town is 150 miles north of London and lies along the River Rase. At one time the town was fondly called 'Little Rasen' but when the railway made its way over in 1848 Market Rasen became to large and populated to carry such a name.

The Lincolnshire Wolds are at the edge of Market Rasen. These beautiful groupings of hills are a designated area of outstanding natural beauty. The North Sea runs parallel to them and they are the highest land mark in eastern England.

The town developed mostly in the Victorian Era but a fifteenth century church St. Thomas Church still exists in the community today. At a glance the town is a traditional market village. There are some Georgian buildings and the shop fronts are the original creations still unchanged after all these years; adding to the overall charm of the area.

Market Rasen is most known and appreciated for its Racecourse. It is a famous National Hunt Course that many come to take part in. There are weekly race nights and Jump racing every month as well as special events all throughout the year.

Visitors can also enjoy the Golfing in Market Rasen. There is a Par 70, eighteen hole course that legitimately boasts of being the most beautiful in the county. The River Rase flows right through the course offering a natural hazard other than the pretty tree lined fairways. If golf is not the event of choice there is always rugby. The town has a rugby team that has been around since 1952. The club is known for the welcoming attitudes and friendly behaviour.

The market days are Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and on the Tuesday shop there is an auction for goods and produce.
