A Caribbean Christmas

Christmas in the Caribbean is a magical time and a gift to be able to experience a rainbow of cultures and festivities on one little island. Yes, it is a shock to the senses for those of us accustomed to chilly nights spent snuggled around a fire. But should you find yourself on vacation in the Caribbean for the holidays, be prepared for some serious fun in the form of carnivals, festivals, and all-night parties.
As far as holiday traditions in the Caribbean, its not always Christmas lights on palm trees... you will be surprised by the history and practices found on some islands. Check out what Robert Curley, editor of the Caribbean section at About.com has to say...
"The islands of the Netherlands Antilles have a unique Christmas celebration that comes straight from Holland, with visits from Sinterklaas and his mysterious minions, the Zwarte Piet (Black Petes). In Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire, St. Maarten, St. Eustatius, and Saba, children receive their holiday gifts not only on Christmas morning but also on Dec. 6, the birthday of St. Nicholas..." read more here. **Photo from here also!

Hollywood Experience in Ouarzazate Morocco

Ouarzazate is a Moroccan city of different cultures and traditions. Ouarzazate Morocco has been the favorite film locations of many directors and actors. It has now become the Moroccan Hollywood because the many film shoots held here.

One of the places to see in Ouarzazate Morocco is Aït Benhaddou which is along the river of Ouarzazate. It was used as the background for the movies Gladiator and Jewel of the Nile. Most of the inhabitants of this town live on the other side of the river. Many who would like to take a sandy experience at the Sahara desert go through this city. The next attraction you can find here is an old Jewish quarter. Taourirt Kasbah is an old palace and Jewish quarter with many interesting historical events. Today, Kasbah has ruined parts but there are still villagers living within this town. Everything can be seen directly from the main courtyard of Kasbah. Guests can take a peek into the reception rooms, palace kitchen, and harem rooms.

Kelaa El Megouna in Ouarzazate Morocco is also one of the interesting places to visit. It is known as the "rosewater capital" of Ouarzazate as this town is situated in a Valley of the Roses that holds a huge distillery to process and produce scented rose water in enormous amounts for the use of the entire nation. Rosewater is a common ingredient both for perfume and cooking in Morocco. An annual celebration is even held every year in May to celebrate the rose festival. The celebration takes place during the time of harvest. At this time, the streets are crowded with stalls and a big event of dancing and music takes place.

Hilton Head Golf Vacation - A Golfer's Digest Top 10 Pick

If golf is your game and "world class" is your style, you simply must plan a Hilton Head golf vacation. Why? There's no disputing that Hilton Head Island is a golfer's paradise, trite as it may sound.

Imagine the perfect golfing enclave and it would most certainly look just like this unique Island - a community dedicated to golf and golfers. Imagination becomes reality on the Hilton Head Island golf courses. There's a Hilton Head golf course for just about everybody, right there in your own "back yard." The Hilton Head golf courses are always waiting on the Atlantic coast to thrill vacationers.

It's hard to believe, but there are twenty-six golf courses on the tiny Island. There are unique details, contouring, and course challenges with each and every one of them.

A wonderful variety of design will challenge every aspect of your game. Some courses are wooded and others are heavily contoured with undulating greens. Several courses boast at least one hole with an ocean view.

On the other hand some courses favor open expanses, if that's what suits your fancy. Many courses take advantage of the ponds and lowland marshes that are "standard equipment" on a barrier island. For example, the Sea Pines-Ocean Course is actually a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. These and many others make for a perfect Hilton Head golf vacation.

In fact, readers of Golf Digest include the Island among the top ten best golf resorts -- the courses are that well designed. So make the rounds and don't get stuck on just one course. Each offers something unique to keep you on your toes and thrill you with its natural beauty. There is forested countryside, breathtaking ocean views, and natural lagoons, lakes and rivers.

Let the rest of the family lounge on the beach while you retreat to one of the Island's 26 golf courses. Or make it a family affair; there are courses and holes offering challenges to all skill levels. That includes courses that have been designed by some of the most famous architects in the world.

There's Jack Nicklaus' Melrose, Arnold Palmer's Crescente Pointe, Fuzzy Zoeller and Clyde Johnston's Daufuskie Island, and Robert Trent Jones' Palmetto Dunes. That's just a few of the professional courses beckoning you to a Hilton Head golf vacation.

The first couple of days in the 9 day safari will fly you in from Johannesburg airport to Maun from where a light aircraft will take you to Makgadikgadi National Park where you will spend 2 nights in the lap of luxury at Leroo La Tau Camp. The camp is built on top of cliffs at 15 metres above the Boteti river bed. You will get excellent views from your camp of the desert and its denizens. The water hole located right in front of you attracts wild animals during the dry season. The next couple of days you will spend at Chobe National Park where you will spend your 2 nights at the Savute Safari Lodge. A light aircraft will fly you to the lodge which actually looks through old Camelthorn trees at the river bed. You can peep through the branches and look at elephant herds and prides of lions. You will spend the last two days in the Moremi wildlife reserve with its rich woodlands, flood plains and scenic lagoons with sightings of lions, cheetah and other predators and drink a toast to the Botswana safari as the sun sets.

Embark on a Tour of South Africa

South Africa is a country rich in culture and heritage, fast-paced, dynamic and cosmopolitan. It is renowned for its array of natural attractions - from the stretches of untouched beaches, to the rolling mountains and game reserves teeming with some of the world's most magnificent bird and wildlife species. It is also known for gold mining and cities that bustle with life and activity.

It is recommended that a tour of South Africa should last at least 2 weeks - as this is the ideal amount of time to experience the diversity of the country and soak up the magic of this Rainbow Nation. With the FIFA 2010 World Cup™ drawing closer, South Africa is gearing up for a year of excitement and bubbling with anticipation to welcome visitors from all over the world!

You could spend an entire lifetime in South Africa and still not manage to experience all the wonders the country has to offer. That said, if you are embarking on a South Africa tour, be sure to add these world-famous destinations and activities to your itinerary. Bring your binoculars, your camera, an open heart and a spirit of adventure!

Cape Agulhas in the Cape Overberg marks the southern most tip of the African continent and a must-visit destination on your South African tour. This quaint seaside town boasts homely bed and breakfasts and a pristine stretch of coastline. Visit the lighthouse, one of the oldest in South Africa and witness a panoramic view of the ocean. Be sure to keep an eye out for Southern Right whales and bottlenose dolphins - the area's local aquatic residents. Take a quiet stroll to the official Cape Agulhas plaque, a landmark of the place where the warm waters of the Indian Ocean meet the icy waters of the Atlantic.

Another location not to be missed on your tour of South Africa is the De Hoop Nature Reserve, one of the largest areas that has been well maintained and cared for by the Cape Nature Conservation. In this gorgeous area, you'll drive past fields littered with colourful flowering fynbos, the dominant vegetation group of this area. The terrestrial nature of the reserve is an ideal habitat for a number of animals, so be sure to keep an eye out for mountain zebra, the rare bontebok and the ever-present baboons of the area. De Hoop Nature reserve is a birders paradise - so keep your bird book at hand to tick off all the resident species you may come across.

Wind your way along the scenic Garden Route on your South Africa tour - a must visit, beautiful stretch of land. Along this route, you will have the opportunity to explore many costal towns like Knysna, the picturesque seaside town situated on a lagoon. If you are looking for adventure on your tour of South Africa, then be sure to stop by Bloukrans bridge - one of the world's highest and most exhilarating bungee jumps!
Surfing enthusiasts should carry on along the Garden Route to Jeffrey's Bay - where some of the world's most famous surfing events take place. It's a magical place to relax and observe the famed "tube" waves. While in this area, a great idea is to experience the Addo Elephant National Park, where you will have the chance to see the Big 5!

The South African Wild Coast is a rugged stretch of pristine coastline and an ideal spot for anglers and nature lovers to visit. Whether you are looking for a rustic tented beach hut or the excitement of a casino, the Wild Coast will surpass all of your expectations. Braaied fish, boogie boarding and lounging under the sun is mandatory, at least once, on any tour of South Africa!

Another breathtaking place to snap magnificent shots of the wild flowers or merely marvel at the rock formations is the Golden Gate National Park. This park is set on the edge of the Drakensburg Mountains, which have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site. When you visit, you will see why this majestic natural mountain range is internationally acclaimed. KwaZulu-Natal boasts many hiking trails, including one to the Tugela Falls - this is not only good for the body, but when you witness the water cascading down over the famed "amphitheatre", you will realise it is truly good for the soul. A hike, whether it be in a forest, on a mountain, or even in a game park is also a must on a South African tour.

The city lights will inspire you when you visit the buzzing cities of Cape Town or Johannesburg. Given its rich history derived from the famous gold rush, Johannesburg is worth a few days visit on your South African tour. Not only is it a shopping Mecca, there are also various museums that document the cultural and historical journey of people though the eras. In Johannesburg, you can also go on a township tour of the vibrant Soweto, world-famous for the coverage it received during the apartheid era and now famous for its music and jovial shebeens (local bars). You can even visit the former home of former president and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Nelson Mandela, not to mention taking the plunge and taking a tour of the old goldmines, 700ft underground at Gold Reef City. Cape Town is another must visit city - with Table Mountain, Robben Island, the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and the vibrant V&A Waterfront, you will be in awe for the duration of your stay.

A South African tour is sure to awaken your senses, talk to your soul and leave you with memories of a well-lived adventure. The diversity, the culture and the landscape of the country allow any traveller to find what they are looking for.

If you are planning on visiting the Rainbow Nation of South Africa, contact Oasis Overland. This overland travel company will plan you an exciting, adventure-filled trip that encompasses all you dream of experiencing on your South Africa tour.

Tips For Camping in the Winter

When people think of camping, they typically envision summer vacations: warm days, clear starry nights, nature in full-bloom. Few campers think about camping in the winter. However, like summer camping, winter camping is enjoyable if you know how to prepare properly.

One benefit of winter camping is that you don't have as much company - children are back in school, and the cold weather keeps the crowds away. The mysterious beauty of winter is another draw: imagine still silhouettes of bare tree branches, refreshingly cold and crisp air, a light dusting of freshly fallen snow. And if the scenery doesn't entice you, well, know that winter camping rates are as cheap as they come.

Still, winter camping presents a number of unique hazards and risks. By following the suggestions below, you can effectively minimize those risks.

Obtain the Right Equipment

1. You'll need a few special items in addition to your regular camping equipment, including a heavier sleeping bag and bedding to combat colder temperatures. It is also essential to bring heavier, warmer clothing.
2. You'll need a reliable source of light during the darker days and longer nights. LEDs are brighter than other bulbs, and they require less energy, so I recommend them for winter camping expeditions. Choose an LED lantern to enjoy the most light around the campsite. A portable LED flashlight is more convenient for moving about the campground at dusk. Better yet, a LED headlamp will free up both hands for optimized efficiency and convenience.
3. Don't overlook packing a good knife. A combo knife or multi-tool is a great option for serving multiple needs. When you're in potentially hazardous conditions, it's best to be as prepared as possible and have as much at your disposal as you can carry.
4. Be sure you have adequate storage for all your supplies. It should be waterproof and/or airtight, to shut out the winter weather.
5. Beef up your survival kit. In addition to basic first-aid supplies, make sure you have an emergency blanket, a whistle, and a reliable source of fire, like waterproof matches, a lighter, fire-starter, candles, etc.

Camp Safely

1. Before you leave, tell people where you're going and give them an itinerary.
2. Do not camp alone. The adage "safety in numbers" couldn't be more true for winter camping.
3. If you will be camping in the wild, be sure you thoroughly know the area where you're heading. Obtain any maps you will need and be comfortable with basic map-reading skills like using a compass.
4. Ensure someone in your party is educated in basic wilderness first-aid.
5. Check the weather before you leave, so you know what to expect. Really, you should be prepared for any condition, as weather has a tendency to change unexpectedly during the winter.

When you are adequately prepared and take the right precautions, the advantages of winter camping heavily outweigh its disadvantages. I encourage you to find a friend, pack your camping equipment and give winter camping a try.

~Richard McNeal, 2009

Man and Nature in Perfect Harmony on Hilton Head Island

Sea Pines Forest Preserve is one of Hilton Head Island's most exotic nature tours. You can survey original Hilton Head Island habitat up close and personal from the comfort and convenience of your own car.

This is a driving tour as well as a walking tour, which makes it an attractive option for the very young and the very old. That's because you don't have to leave the car to enjoy much of the scenery at Sea Pines Forest Preserve. This is a boon for elderly persons who may have mobility issues or for families with very small children,

Not only that, you may feel safer watching the alligators from the security of your automobile, if they tend to make you nervous. However, when it comes to the T-Rex's we make no guarantees.

You'll find an island-park on a lake near the half-way-point of the Sea Pines Forest preserve, beautifully cultivated, with multiple walking bridges. From these there is access to a picnic area on the island, which lies in a gorgeous setting.

After lunch you can stroll along the pier and try to spot some alligators. There are plenty of large turtles to satisfy the alligator appetite, but keep your children in close tow at all times. Alligators can move surprisingly fast. Birdlife and fish are abundant in and around the lake and the public is free to try their hand at fishing.

There are actually several other lakes near the center of the park, all easily accessible by Fish Island Trail. This is a paved roadway which cuts through the Sea Pines Forest Preserve, from East to West. Walkways allow access to the lush swamps and bogs, which surround the central sanctuary and lakes on all sides.

The ancient Indian Shell Ring is within easy walking distance of the picnic area, while Harbor Town and the Stoney-Baynard ruins are not far by car. Flora, wildflowers and wildlife, small birds and butterflies and dragonflies are everywhere along the way. But you risk being carried off by a herd of mosquitoes if you forget your bug spray. Don't leave home without it.

Sandals to discontinue management of Dunn's River Resort
Sandals and Sagicor Life Jamaica have decided to part ways. Sandals next July will cease managing the 256-room Sandals Dunn's River Hotel in Mammee Bay, St. Ann. The two companies issued a joint press release on the decision. Sagicor is actively seeking a hotelier to manage the property, whose official lease to Sandals ends on May 31. The announcement brings to nine the number of hotels being operated by Sandals in Jamaica under the Sandals and Beaches brands.

In local Jamaican press reports Sandals is denying that the move was made in response to the current economic situation by pointing out that the company recently acquired Emerald Bay in the Bahamas from Four Seasons. Sandals also cited other investments in existing properties, such as the new River Suites at Sandals Negril and Sandals Royal Caribbean. In addition, the company is constructing Sandals City in Kingston and renovating the Dragon Bay Resort in Portland. Located on Jamaica’s northern shores, the hotel has been in operation since 1959 and has undergone several name changes, modernizations and renovations subsequently. Sagicor purchased the hotel in 1989 and in 2006 invested $15 million in renovations.

“After 15 years of successful partnership and in an amicable arrangement, Sandals Resorts International has decided to terminate its lease with the owners of the Sandals Dunn’s River Villaggio Golf Resort & Spa property in Ocho Rios, Jamaica on May 31, 2010,” Sandals said. “Sandals Resorts International chooses an ownership strategy as a whole, and as such the Sandals Dunn’s River lease no longer fits our current business model. We continually strive to improve our products for consumers and therefore require the flexibility to implement changes without restrictions and to improve, upgrade and maintain our resort product on an ongoing basis. This was not possible under our current lease terms at Sandals Dunn’s River and was the guiding reason behind our decision.”

Guests scheduled to stay at Sandals Dunn’s River following July 31, 2010 will have the option to change their booking to any like accommodation at other Sandals Resorts in the Caribbean without penalty or change fees. Airline change fees may still apply if guests change to another destination or change travel dates. Call 866-498-3218 or visit Sandals Website.

Disney, Carnival and Celebrity Cruises With Kids

Nowadays the modern cruises (Disney, Carnival and Celebrity) make a special effort to be kid-compatible. They have child-centered activities that are available all day long. There are also supervised play areas where children can play. But you should keep in mind that the majority of cruises do not provide activities for children under 4 years.

In addition, children are not allowed to visit the pool unless they are toilet trained. The railings on most ships are not designed to be child safe. Unlike Disneyland where guard rails are vertical and less than six inches apart, nothing separates toddlers from the sea on a cruise ship except widely spaced horizontal bars.

Babies under the age of 1 year may almost be cruise-compatible, if they sleep easily and are generally even tempered. Cruise ship cabins are small. And a crying baby may create a lot of discomfort for parents and fellow travelers who paid hundreds or thousands for a perfect holiday. The stress of trying to keep calm an unhappy child may not be the most relaxing holiday for mom.

This will be a perfect trip for each member of your family if you travel with five to twenty of your closest relatives, including children. There is always someone to go out with and things to do. Children and adults can mingle freely. Everyone has their own cabin to retire to and no one has to clean up.

No doubt that every family should take a cruise with children, because it is the unforgettable adventure and memories for a lifetime. You will be surprised when you find out what an amount of information your children can learn every time you go ashore. You'll certainly love the relaxed days you can spend playing on the ship. However, if you have children under the age of 4, think twice before taking a cruise.
