Kyrenia Gate

When visiting Nicosia on a luxury holiday in North Cyprus, you will have to go through Kyrenia Gate, the entrance to the city from the north. Built all the way back in 1567, this dates back to the Venetian's rule of the island, but nowadays is the place to begin your journey through the city. Not only is it the entrance, but it also houses the tourist information centre for the city, so pick up a few maps and brochures from the ground floor, then head upstairs for a lovely view across the city, and begin to plan your visit.

Selimiye Mosque

Selimiye Mosque started out its life as the Roman Catholic St. Sophia Cathedral and was built between 1208 and 1326 while the Lusignans were in Cyprus. It was converted to a mosque in 1570, and today the impressive structure is seen as the most important example of Gothic architecture on the whole of the island.

Mevlevi Museum

The Mevlevi Museum is well worth visiting on a holiday to North Cyprus. Not only is the building that houses the collection of Turkish art an impressive 17th century structure, but the museum now has a strong focus on Turkish Cypriot cultural anthropology. The Armenian Church

Nicosia's Armenian Church has undoubtedly seen better days, but is still a must-visit site for its historical and cultural significance. Built in the 13th century, the church was believed to be founded immediately following the fall of Jerusalem as a centre for the women of Cyprus. Located right on the border between North and South when the city was divided in 1963, the church was wrecked and left in a sorry state before it was highlighted for renovation. Despite its mixed fortunes in the past, the site is doubtless of great historical value and is a must see sight on your luxury holiday in North Cyprus.

The Markets

No holiday in North Cyprus would be complete without some time spent in the hustle and bustle of the markets, and thankfully Nicosia has some excellent stalls which are certainly worth a visit. Goods that can be bought at the various market stalls cover the full range, from leather bags, belts and shoes to fresh organic fruit and vegetables, as well as local cheeses, olive oil and other produce.
