Things to do in Phuket 2009

Phuket is an action-packed place to go on holiday. There are so many things to do in Phuket. Whether you like your kicks adrenaline-fuelled or you're into more subdued activities, there's no way you could ever be bored during a vacation in Phuket.

One of most popular things to do in Phuket is diving. Phuket is revered as one of the world's top-10 diving destinations. Diving in Phuket is a great activity thanks to warm, clear waters and an abundance of marine life, corals and rock formations.

There are lots of great dive spots around the coast of Phuket. Shark Point, for example, is where divers often come across leopard sharks. Nearby, the King Cruiser wreck where the remains of an 85-meter catamaran can be explored. North of Shark Point is Anemone Reef, which is a large, submerged rock covered with sea anemones.

Snorkeling is another fun activity to experience during a visit to Phuket. Snorkel equipment can be hired at most of the beaches. Kata Beach and Freedom Beach are two particularly good spots for snorkeling in Phuket.

Sticking with an aquatic theme, surfing is a sport that has grown in popularity in recent years in Phuket. There's now a fully active surf community ready to tear it up on the waves whenever the swell is big enough. Kata Beach is widely regarded as Phuket's best surfing beach.

Whether you're a beginner or more advanced, surfing in Phuket is always a lot of fun. Other beaches worth checking out include Kata Noi, Laem Singh and Kalim Beach. There are several surf contests in Phuket throughout the year, so there's no excuse not to get involved.

Jet-skis are, unfortunately, also common at Phuket's main beach spots. No doubt it's tempting to speed through the waves, but the noise disturbance is a real turn-off for anyone enjoying the sun, sea and sand. There have also been several incidents of people riding jet-skis into helpless swimmers.

If you're looking for more conventional things to do in Phuket, there are several cinemas, a handful of bowling alleys and a couple of shooting ranges. The Patong Go-Kart Speedway is always good for a bit of fun, especially if you're with a large group of friends.

As with many of Southeast Asia's most popular destinations, there are several places where you can go bungee jumping. Jungle Bungee Jump and World Bungee Jumping are two operators ready to let you take a leap of faith while in Phuket.

Personal Protection and Traveling Alone

Traveling alone makes people vulnerable and open for danger. There are many things that you can do for personal protection to ensure your safety.

When you are traveling alone and you know you will be alone it is very important to plan your trip in advance. Know where you are going to be, learn the map, determine your transportation and more. If you get a rental car the best thing you can do is get the GPS system. The last thing you want to happen is to get lost from your hotel on a bad side of town. A GPS allows you not to have to stop to ask strangers that you don't know for directions. Also, you should find out if the place you are traveling to is a safe destination for women to go to, especially if you are headed out of the country.

When you are traveling alone it may be tempting to get a cheap hotel so you can save money. One thing to consider is that the majority of the criminals are not going to target people in the larger and safer hotels. This is because the larger hotels have a valet service, security guards, security cameras, and provide a safe place to stay. The cheaper places may have the door to your room on the outside of the hotel, no security, and may not even have a well lit parking lot. Also, when you choose your hotel make sure it is near attractions and the location you need to go to. This way you won't have to travel as far and you will minimize the chances of getting lost.

If you are traveling to another country it is important to learn the language a little bit so you do not have too big of a communication gap. When you are alone in another country and something happens to you it will be impossible to find help if you cannot speak the language. Practice before you plan your vacation.

Another very important thing you need to do when you are traveling out of the states by yourself is find out where the US embassy is located. If you are robbed, attacked, raped, kidnapped, or anything else this is where you need to go. They will protect you and get you back to the states and home to your family.

You might consider personal devices such as a stun gun, Taser or pepper spray for protection and self defense when you travel out of the country. Always find out what the laws are before you board a plane. You don't want to end up in a foreign jail because you didn't do the proper research. Take care of yourself and plan ahead so you can have a safe vacation.

When you are traveling out of the country there are many things you need to consider so you are as safe as possible. The best thing you can do is plenty of research on the crime and the city you are going to. Find a big and safe hotel and don't be too cheap. Paying for safety is the best thing you can do in another country. Also, find the US embassy and be clear about how to get to it.

Gambling in Kansas

Situated in the very heartland of America, the state of Kansas sits in what is known as the "mid west" of the continent. With a population of around two and three quarter million, Kansas is bordered by the states of Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado and Oklahoma. Kansans are engaged in farming as well as industry and enjoy an average salary of just under $30,000 annually, which is a little lower than the national average. For those Kansans who enjoy gambling, or for visitors from out of state, either on business or pleasure there are plenty of places to go and have a good time while testing your luck and your skills either across the table or on slot games. Gambling in Kansas is both legal and readily available.

For the tourist to Kansas there is much to do and see. One of the most popular attractions for the aviation enthusiast is the Mid-America Air Museum, housing one of the largest collections of civilian and military aircrafts in the country. If your timing is right, you might be lucky to see the annual air show held in Kansas, which makes for a mighty spectacle. For the lovers of more static tourist attractions, the University of Kansas Natural History Museum contains examples of fossils, birds, mammals and plants that existed on Earth long before casinos and gambling have ever been thought of.

In proportion to its population, Kansas has a lot of casinos: nine in total. There are some pretty large and very luxurious casinos in the state, and the jewel in the crown is Harrah's Prairie Band Casino, in the town of Mayetta. With something to offer for every player, the Prairie Band Casino has almost one thousand slots to choose from, offering the possibility to bet low and win big. There are also more than thirty tables to play on, and the games available are the ones loved and familiar to all, blackjack, roulette and craps. There is head to head action for gamblers who only want to play poker, and regularly scheduled Texas Hold'em tournaments with some big money prizes to be won. Many of the players taking part in these tournaments are college students, who gained their first experience of this helter skelter version of poker playing online so if you're an online gamer you should find yourself in good company.

The largest casino in Kansas is the Golden Eagle, which while it has fewer games than the Prairie Band Casino, it has spread them out over more floor space. For those of you who like the wide open spaces, then Kansas is for you and especially the Golden Eagle Casino.

As you would come to expect from casinos that pride themselves as being in the upper bracket, as well as the gambling action you will find restaurants, bars and entertainment that would do Las Vegas proud. Open around the clock, these facilities are there to make visitors to Kansas as well as the hard working local population enjoy their hard earned leisure time to the maximum.

Africa- There Such a Thing As Positive Tourism?

Many would argue the ill effects tourism can have on natural habitats and the animals themselves but the major argument for positive tourism is sustainable tourism - sharing the benefits of wildlife and socioeconomic development through the promotion of tourism. The objective of those working in the African travel industry should be to bring about sustainable economic development by way of eco-tourism, which is said to be the fastest growing industry in the world! Poverty and ineffective land use can be addressed with the help of tourism opportunities like African safaris, adventure holidays and fair trade travel.

Contrary to popular belief poverty in rural Africa is caused by lack of education, massive unemployment problems (due to large masses of land and the remoteness of many areas) and the limited options for the profitable use of such land. Sustainable projects and private commercial ventures that provide adventure holidays have economic potential through eco-tourism because they make use of the natural resources an area has in a way that benefits the local population without depleting those same natural resources.

Without such forward thinking approaches local people in and around remote areas have few alternatives but to exhaust the very resources (animals, land and natural beauty) on which their survival depends. Eco-tourism can be seen to protect the world's natural assets by emphasising their value to visitors and locals alike.

Historically, it was the Berlin Treaty of 1884 that literally carved Africa up with no concept of tribal groupings, wildlife migration routes or ecosystems. Current national boundaries reflect this somewhat warped history. The establishment of 'peace parks' like the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier conservation area aim to correct this past century but significant injustice by building on neighbouring relationships and encouraging improvements to natural habitats, wildlife and people through the joint management of these resources. The Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier will become the worlds largest conservation area straddling Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe upon the completion of the project in 2010.

Eco-tourism and the development of 'peace parks' are an up and coming standard that African Governments (including Zambias) are using to create a sense of harmony between humankind (both foreign and local) and nature by using the lands natural resources to create prosperity. The beneficiaries are:

  • visitors who leave more knowledgeable and with a positive and authentic African experience,
  • local people who benefit from job creation and the development of schools and clinics,
  • and also business owners who work sustainably and profitably.

All these factors lead to economic stability and since stability is seen to be the cornerstone of peace, when all benefit and development is sustainable, peace prevails, hence the name 'peace parks'.

Cultural Shock When Traveling

Why do you travel? You want to experience the new things; you want to get away from the busy and chuffy life? You want to learn about the other culture? It does not matter what your reason why you are going to travel, you will still meet lots of new things which may shock you and one of the things is the culture.

First of all, from the point of view from a person who comes from a developing country, I was shocked when I came to New York. Everything here is totally different. They do not have any motorbike or even if they have, those motorbikes are much bigger than in Vietnam where I come from.

The first thing I shocked me is the traffic system. I come from the place where people say the traffic is the craziest in the world. However, I am used to it, I find it normal, and it is just different here. Everything is organized, everything is very fast. The cars here travel very fast, it is about 100 kilometers per hour while in Vietnam even on highway, cars travel at the speed of 60 kilometers and in the busy streets they travel only at 40 kilometers.

Also, in our country everything is messy, and we do not often follow the traffic rule that strict. People can cross the street even if we do not have crossing line. In our country, if people cross the street, other vehicle keep going as nothing happens. However, here if someone crosses the street, every vehicle will stop right away. It looks like they have problems. The first time I crossed the street, I was so surprised because I saw so many which were running stopped right away when they saw me. I thought maybe their cars had problems or anything like that.

Also, what surprises me is the cleanness of the streets. In our streets, we will see lots of trash or things like that along the way. People are eating, and then throw it right away on the street. People just do not care about their environment and act like that they will not be any problem out of them. However, here, I find people care more about their environment than ever. They eat, and then they put the can into the trash bin. I like it more than just throw them to any place on the street.

Secondly, I find the restaurant and markets here so different. In Vietnam, we have street life. You can buy anything you need on the pavement of the street, from grocery to food, from your house facility to anything. Whenever we are hungry and we need anything to eat, we just go out at the front of our gate, there are plenty of street restaurant and they are so cheap and delicious.

Also, for market, we can buy anything within 5 minute walk. Everything is very cheap and fresh. The fruit is sold within a day, the vegetable is also sold within a day. However, here is so different. I still cannot make myself used to the fast that we have to drive one hour to get to the market and usually the food here are frozen and we will have to buy food for a whole week, which means we will put them in a fridge for another week.

A Guide to Phuket

Fans of rock music will certainly not be disappointed with a trip to Phuket. The island has a vibrant live-music scene that covers most of the bases, from jazz through to good old rock n roll. If you'd rather mosh to rock than bop to dance beats, there are a few clubs and pubs you ought to know about.

Although it's something of a cliché on the island, Rock City on the beach road in Patong is an established rock club that caters to a primarily tourist clientele. As soon as you see the enormous gorilla above the entrance, you know you're in for a treat, and Rock City delivers.

Rock City is a fun kind of place with bands comprising of locals, Aussies, Swedes, Filipinos and so on. There are usually three or four bands on per night and each has a different style and character. You won't hear any original songs at this Phuket club, but you will be able to dance away to the links of Bon Jovi, Metallica, ACDC and Guns n Roses, as well as a few more-modern bands.

As if one Rock City in Patong wasn't enough, there is now a second venue at the top of Soi Bangla, on the opposite from the beach. It's much the same as the original Rock City, but the acoustics are a little bit different. Expect to drink and dance until about 2 am.

Although it's primarily a jazz club, Karma Lounge in Kata is a fun live-music venue where the music sometimes drifts into rock. The vibes are always positive at this Phuket club and people get down until the early hours of the morning.

Of course, no trip to Phuket would be complete without sampling the local rock scene. Although there aren't many bands in Phuket penning and playing their own songs, there are a lot of decent cover bands playing in local clubs.

9 Richter in Phuket Town is a good place to catch Thai live music. The venue also hosts special events with famous stars from the Thai rock and indie scenes.

Also in Phuket Town is Blue Marina, at the TK Hotel. This is an exciting club popular with young people in Phuket. The music is always fast and fun, plus Blue Marina also hosts special events with popular bands.

The majority of Phuket's rock clubs can be found in Patong. It usually takes a little stroll around the area to find somewhere playing live music. The quality of the bands varies considerably and there is an unhealthy obsession with the likes of Bon Jovi, but it's all in the holiday spirit and the drink are cheap and even the Thais seem to have a good time.

Scuba Diving in Antigua

If you are looking for a holiday spot where you can enjoy sunny warm beaches with scuba diving facilities, you need to look no further, because the place you're looking for is definitely Antigua. Located in the middle of the Leeward Islands in the Eastern Caribbean, Antigua is just adjacent to the north of equator, and provides warm waters and beautiful dive locations. The surrounding islands of Antigua include St. Bart's, St. Martin, and Montserrat. Antigua is the largest of the British Leeward Islands, and is 14 miles long and 11 miles wide.

Except for the hurricane season, Antigua has blissfully warm waters all year round. The place offers clear dive locations, great scuba diving tour operators and services, and is overwhelmed with physical and natural beauty. There are a great number of hotels and resorts that provide luxurious accommodation, even in the low budget arena. The place also offers a large number of scuba diving schools and tours, depending on your skill level.

The water around Antigua is unmatchable. As it is surrounded by very well preserved coral reefs, walls, and shipwrecks, the water is very clear and the underwater visibility ranges from 40 to 150 feet. The southern and eastern coasts of the island are surrounded by shelves, which make it a great spot for diving or snorkelling, especially for less experienced divers.

Advanced divers can go to many other diving spots, with the most popular being the ledge at Sunken Rock, located on the southern coast of the island. The dive depths may range from 25 to 80 feet. Most of the diving spots are located near Antigua, and can be reached in just five minutes. However, there are some diving spots that could take up to 40 minutes to reach. The wreck of Andes is a popular spot in Antigua, where a merchant ship sank. With plenty of tropical marine plants and underwater life, you can enjoy a lot while underwater.

It is possible to sign up for various scuba diving courses or tours while on the island. If you are a beginner and have not yet learnt anything before arriving on the islands, it is a good idea to enrol in a one day course which is short, yet intensive enough to teach you all you need to know for basic dives. The instructors are highly professional and will teach you all the proper techniques and theory, along with the important safety tips before they let you go under water. Furthermore, they also make sure that you are well prepared to go under water before they issue you any equipment.

If you are a certified diver, you can sign up for either daily dives, or three or five day packages, with or without equipment rental charges. For entry on the island, you need to have a return ticket, but if you are from the Unites States or Canada, or possess a British passport, you do not need a visa to set foot on the island. In any case, you just need to prove that you have the finances to cover your stay and accommodation charges. Furthermore, you also need to assure them that you will leave before your six months are up, as that is the maximum stay allowed on a visit visa.

So, if you're looking to spend your vacations scuba diving and spending time relaxing on the beautiful beaches, then Antigua is the right place for you.

Comedy clubs have sprung up in the last ten years or so as audiences have demanded better comedies and more performances than the restricted venues were able to provide but it is the older clubs which still dominate the scene in Houston.

If you are a looking for a great night out with good food and excellent food and drink, then a trip to one of the top three comedy spots in Houston is just what the doctor ordered to cure any blues and to set the seal on a great visit to Houston.

Here are the top three comedy nightclubs for you to enjoy in Houston.

The Improve

The Improve has been making them laugh for over 20 years and has a stable of top grade comedians on hand to make sure you laugh the night away. Food is served in the evening with a restricted menu available during the day - make sure you enquire with the venue prior to booking and note there is also a restricted menu available depending on where you sit. One nice touch is that the management has split the venue up into separate sections for smokers and non-smokers.

Minimum age for entry is 18 but remember you must be over 21 to drink alcohol in Texas.

Dinner reservations get priority on the seats but otherwise it is a first come-first served basis so you are recommended to get there early if you want to be sure of getting in. Like the other two comedy venues in Houston, it is commonly sold out so don't leave it to chance.

The venue is located near downtown Houston and paid valet parking is available if you don't feel like a short walk from the mall within which the club is located though there is also free parking at the rear of the venue too.

Laff Spot

The Laff Spot runs shows on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings and combines some of the best comedy acts in town with excellent jazz and fine food. Unlike the Improv which is comedy at its rough and readiest, the Laff Spot is a refined establishment and the food and service are excellent. The club is also completely non-smoking and there is a full waitress service on offer while parking is plentiful in the vicinity.

One feature offered by the Laff Spot is a defensive driving course taken by customers with the team of comedians - the joke is that the certificate you come away with is recognized state and country wide and may end up getting you a reduction in your driver's insurance premiums!

Houston's Laff Stop

This is perhaps the premier Houston comedy club and certainly the most expensive. Class comedy acts which are nationally recognized frequently use the Laff Stop as the venue for the Houston leg of their tour and you are well advised to check who is playing before you make a booking. The club claims to be Houston's laughter central and probably this is not an idle boast but competition amongst the established clubs is fierce!

Food and drink are plentiful too and you can enjoy a great evening's entertainment which also includes plenty of time for music and dancing if you are not inclined to simply have gags thrown at you while sitting around all evening. Comedy show nights are Thursday, Friday and Saturday while they have an open mic night on Wednesdays if you are brave enough to face a crowd for real from the other side of the stage lights.

Hotels in Nassau & Paradise Island in Bahamas

The Bahamas is one of the most visited islands in the entire Caribbean region and this happens because it is very close the the mainland of North America (first Caribbean island which belongs to Bahamas is just at 45 miles distance to Florida!), but also due to the great accommodation offered by hotels in Bahamas. Actually, beach resorts in Bahamas welcome each year a few millions of tourists and the tourist industry of this country employs directly or indirectly about 50% of the local workforce! Most holiday makers choose to spend a vacation in Bahamas to enjoy the splendid beaches from there, to relax in hammocks under waving palm trees, to see beautiful sunsets in the cooling breeze of Caribbean Sea, to taste the spicy Bahamian food, or to practice a wide range of water sports such as scuba diving, snorkeling, windsurfing, kayaking, sailing, surfing, fishing and the list could continue almost endless...

The Bahamas is in fact an archipelago located in the northeastern side of Caribbean region, comprised of two bigger islands (New Providence and Grand Bahama) and a lot of smaller islands, named "The Out Islands", from which the most important are Abaco, Andros, Acklins and Crooked Island, Biminis, Berry Islands, Cat Island, Eleuthera, Exumas, Inaguas, Mayaguana, and San Salvador. As one of the renowned holiday destinations in Bahamas, island of New Providence attracts in its main vacation spots, Nassau and Paradise Island, a big part of travelers who visit this country. Hotels in Nassau and Paradise Island belong to the best of the entire archipelago and most of them are pretty crowded all year round. It features great accommodation amenities and range from 3 star budget units up to luxury 4 and 5 star hotels, which pamper tourists like few other resorts in Caribbean region do! Nassau is also the capital city of the country and the main entrance gate to the holiday resorts. Paradise Island is located off the shore of the city of Nassau and it is perhaps the best know Bahamian vacation destination, featuring also some of the best hotels in Bahamas. In this area the best hotels are Hotel Atlantis Royal Tower, Hotel The Cove at Atlantis, Hotel The Reef at Atlantis, Hotel British Colonial Hilton, all this being 5 star accommodation units, but also Hotel Atlantis Coral Tower, Hotel Sheraton Nassau Beach Resort (4 star resorts) or Hotel Paradise Island Harbour Resort, and Hotel Atlantis Beach Tower, which are 3 star hotels.

Hotels in Nassau and Paradise Island are not the only attractions on island of New Providence. There are a lot of duty-free shops, restaurants, old colonial buildings, cultural centers and, of course, many pristine beaches such as Cable Beach and Paradise Island Beach, which offer exciting holiday activities like sailing, water skiing, snorkeling, windsurfing, scuba diving, and fishing. People who want just to relax, enjoy a couple cocktails and lazing on comfortable sun beds are also welcomed...Tourists interested in cultural events can enjoy musical evenings and hear the frenetic rhythms of "junkanoo", "goombay" and "rake 'n' scrape", musical styles evolved of West African dance music brought by slaves to North America. The tropical atmosphere of this islands is also proper for weddings and tourists who want planning a such event or decide instantly to do it have to know that are required a residence for 24 hours prior to applying for a marriage license, birth certificates and a notarized affidavit. Most hotels are equipped to assist guests with marriage arrangements and have professional wedding planners who can organize a such event like in tales!

A vacation in Bahamas and its hotels is something unique and memories gained there last a lifetime! For longer holidays or just short breakaways, beach resorts in Bahamas are perfect and people who visited once this God blessed land will return again and again to enjoy better the freedom sensation that can be felt only in Caribbean...

10 Great Reasons to Visit Canary Islands

Situated off the north-west coast of Africa yet part of Spain, the Canary Islands offer remarkably constant year-round temperatures which average about 25 degrees Centigrade. Here are 10 great reasons to visit the Canaries, to help start your holiday planning and further research together.

Beaches: Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura have the best beaches of golden sand, while on other islands you can discover beaches of dark volcanic sand or shingle. The biggest resorts are Playa de las Americas in Tenerife and Playa del Ingles in Gran Canaria.

Nightlife: It's sophisticated and international, blending mainland Spanish influences such as flamenco with the hottest disco sounds. Santa Cruz (Tenerife) and Las Palmas (Gran Canaria) are large cities with strong cultural programmes.

Food: The emphasis in resorts is on international cuisine, with a widening choice of fine dining. Also check out local specialities such as fish or pork dishes with green or red mojo sauce, served with salted "wrinkled potatoes".

Wine: Tenerife and Gran Canaria excel at white and sweet wines, but they are little known off the islands because of limited production. "Canary" wine is mentioned in Shakespeare.

Wildlife: The waters around the Canaries are teeming with fish, and the channel separating Tenerife from La Gomera is great for spotting pilot whales and dolphins.

Activities: Volcanic landscapes make the islands a great choice for walking, with many signed routes. Also try camel trekking in Lanzarote, golf (most islands) and diving.

Nature: The interior of most islands is a protected national park. Mount Teide in Tenerife is Spain's highest peak.

Island hopping: Don't forget the smaller islands, which have very little development and can be reached by sea. La Gomera is notable for its banana plantations, La Palma for its vast volcanic crater, and El Hierro for its cliffs and wild landscape.

Shopping: The islands are a recognised tax-free zone so you can pick up bargains, especially electronics.

A holiday in the Canary Islands are warm, welcoming and far more interesting than you can ever imagine if you think only of beach holidays. These volcanic islands have the most amazing landscapes, and local food and wine which are highly distinctive. Discover somewhere different!

The Canary Islands are served from airports throughout Europe, and from the UK all the major regional airports offer a regular year-round service of no-frills , holiday flights to the Islands. You are never far away from a great holiday in the sun.

Finding the Perfect Hotel in 2009

As a busy businessman or woman it is fairly likely that you are going to be on the lookout for a welcoming hotel that is comfortable and within budget whilst travelling around the UK. Thanks to the growth of the internet you can quickly and safely find the hotel for you assuming that you know where you are going to stay!

Step 1 - You can use a huge array of search engines like Yahoo!, MSN or Ask in able to find you hotel but the most popular and well known is Google. It's up to you if you want a vague search giving you more results like "Hotels in Sussex" or a more detailed search for a specific area like "Country House Hotel in Sussex" whatever you do don't search looking for an exact query like "Rye Hotel with a pool and spa based next to a cinema" A search like this will not come back with many results but people try regardless.

Step 2 - Try looking up a hotel through a review site, the people that write on these websites don't hold back and will give an honest report of what they think about the place in question.

Step 3 - If you would rather look through a list of local hotels then there are websites that provide local information. If you look up a "East Sussex Hotel" you will find a large list of sites willing to take you in for the night. If you like what you see either email or call asking for rates and possible discounts. If you do manage to get a discount over the phone be sure to write down the amount and the persons name that you talked to as this will be important later.

Step4 If failing that you still can't find the hotel for you then maybe search some local forums that will have plenty of information and feedback. Search under "Forums about Sussex Hotels" or something similar and you'll be away and booking before you know it.

Value For Money Holidays

When booking a trip abroad people are often so desperate to make sure their time away is perfect they neglect any worries about the price they are paying. As long as people enjoy their trip away they often do not mind what price they pay. However, on returning from their trips many travelers find themselves asking whether they could have had greater value for money.

Unfortunately asking this question when returning from a holiday is too late as travelers should look at money saving tips before they travel. The best way to save money on holidays is to book early or late. Many companies offer great value deals on holidays for travelers who are willing to commit to a trip that is in the next year, for example. As well as making an initial saving by making a booking this way, this method also allows the traveler plenty of time to prepare and make necessary savings well before the trip comes around. Perhaps a greater way to get a 'value for money' holiday is to gamble and wait for a last minute deal.

This method allows travelers to benefit from huge discounts in travel and accommodation but does have an element of risk involved. Travelers make a huge saving as often people cancel holidays or flights are not fully booked up. Once this is the case, holiday providers are willing to offer a holiday at a heavily reduced cost as they look to fill seats on planes! Anyone considering this method must be very flexible and open to different types of holidays as it is often a case of taking what you can get, as opposed to selecting your ideal holiday.

Last minute holidays are a great way of saving in vacations as most late deals save travelers a lot of money. The best way to find cheap last minute holidays is to search the internet or go into a local travel agents days before you wish to travel.

Children And Travel

For recommended local sitters, check with your hotel desk.

DRIVING

If you are renting a car, arrange for a car seat when you reserve. Sometimes the seats are free.

FLYING

On flights within the United States, children under 2 not occupying a seat travel free, and older children currently travel on the lowest applicable adult fare. When traveling abroad, always ask about discounted children's fares. On international flights, the fare for infants under age 2 not occupying a seat is generally either free or 10% of the accompanying adult's fare; children ages 2 through 11 usually pay one-half to two-thirds of the adult fare.

Certain routes, including some in the Caribbean, are considered neither international nor domestic and have still other rules.

Baggage In general, the adult baggage allowance applies for a child's luggage when the child is paying half or more of the adult fare.

Ask about carry-on allowances on foreign trips if you are traveling with an infant. In general, those paying 10% of the adult fare are allowed one carry-on bag, not to exceed 70 pounds or 45 inches (length + width + height) and a collapsible stroller; you may be allowed less if the flight is full.

SAFETY SEATS

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), it's a good idea to use safety seats aloft. Airline policy varies. U.S. carriers allow FAA-approved models, but airlines usually require that you buy a ticket, even if your child would otherwise ride free, because the seats must be strapped into regular passenger seats. Japanese and New Zealand carriers do not allow infant seats; other foreign carriers may do so and may charge the child's rather than the infant's fare for their use, or may require you to hold your baby during takeoff and landing, thus defeating the seat's purpose.

FACILITIES

When making your reservation, ask for children's meals or freestanding bassinets if you need them; the latter are available only to those with seats at the bulkhead, where there's enough legroom. If you don't need a bassinet, think twice before requesting bulkhead seats---the only storage for in-flight necessities is in the inconveniently distant overhead bins.

LODGING

Most hotels allow children under a certain age to stay in their parents' room at no extra charge, but some charge for children as though they were adults; be sure to ask about the cutoff age.

Hot and Cold in Nepal

When I first came to this country eons ago and told people I was from Nepal, I usually got two responses. The first one was more common and dealt exclusively with who, what or where Nepal was. The second was a common query from people who knew just enough about Nepal to be dangerous (A little knowledge.....). These people would always say how cold out it must be there specially in the winter. I would then have to go into detailed explanations about the "cold" in Nepal.

When I came to the US, it was at night in the month of December and the weather was extremely cold. I did not realize any place could be this cold. Next morning, when I woke up and saw the sun shining brightly, I thought that this was more like it. I walked out of the apartment in short sleeves and almost froze on the spot. I rushed back in and was taken to task by the doorman fro going out "without clothes." When I protested that the sun was out, he looked at me in a puzzled manner and said, "Yes, it's ten in the morning but still as cold as the Arctic." When I ventured to explain that the sun was out and it should have been warmer, he replied that the temperature would stay low because it was winter. Then it dawned on me that in the eastern and northern Unite States, the sun was only for lighting purposes and not for heating - winter time, of course. What a strange phenomenon! The sun here was used only as a big torch during the winter - helping people see their way about. I then had to recount to all those "cold" queries about Nepal by explaining that back home the sun not only gave light but also heat.

Most people who knew something about Nepal did so mainly because of Mt. Everest and the Himalayas(?) - please read my last article on this subject. Ergo, almost all of them thought that Nepal was another Antarctica, another frozen wasteland of snow and ice. I then had to explain in detail that Nepal bordered China and India. The northern part (Chinese border) was cold most of the time but warm during the summer. The "middle" part of the country was hot during Spring and Summer and also Fall and Winter when the sun came out. The southern part of the country that bordered India was HOT most of the year and still quite warm during the daytime in the winter months. This polemic left most baffled. They could not believe that a person could walk around in tees and shorts after about ten in the morning in Kathmandu. It was like my Russian acquaintance from Vladivostok who scoffed at people who used to speak of Siberia as the barren wasteland of chills and cold. The common retort seemed to be that it was what they had read from most dissidents ("exiled" writers). This innocent reply infuriated him and sent him into apoplectic fits.

So is Nepal COLD? That depends very much when you go there and which part of the country you go to. For those not up on your latitude and longitude, let me remind one and all that the latitude of Nepal is the same as that of the northern part of Florida. Is Florida a snowy wasteland? You tell me.

The Biggest Ferris Wheels on Earth

With the information explosion on the Internet with the world in financial chaos, it is time to design your own holidays. No longer do you need to be bound by what a glitzy travel agent has to offer you. Just wind up your imagination and the search engines and discover for yourself what's out there. Here is one whacky idea that may find lots of fun .

Create a round the world trip , where you chase the biggest ferris wheels. You read that right. Chase the biggest ferris wheels in the world. You will have a sky rocketing trip, as you journey through the cities of the world, in their bid to fanatically outdo each other. It is amazing that even in a world reeling from one financial crisis to the next, that some things just keep right on turning. Incidentally, the Ferris Wheel has lost it name and is now called the 'Observation Wheel'.

First you could begin with the Southern Star in Melbourne, Australia, a mere 120 metres high, built in 2008. It is the only large permanent ferris, oops, observation wheel in the Southern Hemishpere.

A quick dash across the South Pacific and you could drop into the exotic tropical island of Vanuatu, formerly known at the New Hebrides. This stop is really worthwhile as you visit the world's birthplace of extreme sport - the bungee jump on Ambrym Island. It is a truly mesmerizing sight, but not something you want to try for yourself. The vines are made by the jumpers, who hope and pray the vines are just the right length. Not too much to smack the diver into the ground, not too short they hit the 75 metre rickety bamboo tower. But just enough for the jumper's shoulders to sweep the ground under the tower.

Then drop into Singapore and take a spin on the Syngapore Flyer, also built in 2008, at a height of 165 metres tall. That is around a 54 storey building. A great ride if you can cope with the giddy heights.

The London Eye would make a great {{{fly over of the Thames river|stop}} next at 135 metres tall, which was Europe's tallest wheely in the not too distant past.

Duck through the tunnel to Paris and gaze at the romance of the city from 100 metres up, on the grandfather of ferris wheels, The Ferris Wheel Of Paris, built in early 1900.

Now if you are clever you will time your trip right. You could make it for the grand opening of Berlin's Great Observation Wheel, which is due to be finished in 2009. A lofty 185 metres over the city.

A quick trip down to Dubai and you could observe the opulence of Dubai from the Great Dubai Wheel at a soaring 185 metres. You will be able to pick out all the various nations of the world on the man-made islands, from your advantage point.

Then it is off to highly populated Asia and the Star of Nanchang, towering over China's Jiangxi Province, at 160 metres tall.

Saving the biggest to last, you need to make sure you arrive at the Beijing Great Wheel, which is also contracted for completion during 2009 and will tower 208 metres above the city. That is equal to a 70 storey building swirling high over the city}}}. This is definitely not for those who can't handle heights.

The long gone, world's first ferris wheel, created by George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr., as a landmark for the World Fair in Chicago, in 1893. It had a capacity to carry 2,160 people and was powered by two steam engines. It would take 20 minutes for the wheel to rotate two revolutions. Even The Great Observation Wheel of Beijing, will only have a capacity of 1,920 people.

So having circled the world's great ferris wheels, it will be time to head home again and enjoy the simple things of life once more, with your feet firmly planted on old planet earth .

This once in a lifetime Blue Moon Opportunity to experience all the great observation wheels of the world, will most likely be the only round the world by wheels some of you will attempt . However, there is a Blue Moon Opportunity you can take part in on a regular basis, (and for a lot cheaper). It could alter your life.
