However, there are some gadgets that can be lifesavers when we are on the road.

Besides the obvious devices like iPods, iPhones, video cameras, or even portable laundry gadgets, there are other technological advancements that can bring about peace of mind and lighten the load of travelling.

Here are 5 popular travel gadgets that you might want to take with you on your next trip:

The Memorex Money Clip also serves as a 1GB USB drive so that you can also store such things as photos, files, and music. Plus, it provides a safe way to carry cash when you are on the go.

4. Novatel Mifi: Although you do not always want to be connected on a holiday, there are moments when you might need to get online that do not always involve holing up in your hotel or the nearest Starbucks. For those occasions when you need to get online at the unlikeliest places, get Novatel's Mifi, a personal Wi-Fi hotspot connection. You do have to sign up for a contract from Verizon, but it may be worth it if you are always on the go.

5. Power Monkey Solar Charger: How are you going to keep all those gadgets charged? This small charger can be used for such things as cell phones, digital cameras, iPods, and much more. The Power Monkey Solar Charger is charged by the sun. So simply leave it by a window, attach to your backpack or leave on a car dashboard. Why the Romans Were Fanatical

Water fountains are powerfully associated with the Roman history in particular, because water had a solid religious worth. This was not uncommon in the societies of the times, as the early Greek religions also cited a lot of trust in water and water springs were changed into shrines to heroes and nymphs as well as their deities and goddesses. The Greeks knew that the ability for a dwelling to live, comes from a sustainable source of good water and so the places where their water came from were heralded as a blessing.

They also had the means to move this wholesome water to other sites of interest via irrigation or aqueducts. The Greeks had detailed many fountains in their historical books, such as The Spring of Pirene at Corinth. This contained many springs coming out of a white stone mural to Pegasus, with a basin at the bottom of it. In the same city, there was another fountain shrine to Neptune, which included a dolphin with water flowing from its mouth.

Even today it is easy to distinguish how these early works have stimulated later and even modern models. The Romans were very engaged with these calming fountains and understood the significance and importance of the aqueducts too. They made this sort of fountain their own, by using their own religious and idolised icons to embellish the fountains. As well as using the skill of the time to make sure the ease of use of fresh natural spring water to all cities of the Roman empire and for all people.

Even today, Italy has the scars of these aqueducts, by the side of the stretch, amid Campagna to the capital, Rome. This was one of the most considerable turning points in Roman history, as the renewal of their capital, with a fresh supply of water was commemorated with a breath taking set of public fountains, where the communities could fetch fresh water from. Not surprisingly, there were wealthy and important members of the Roman culture and society who were able to rent their own private water source and custom made their own fountains to party. Examples of private statues included spraying a great water jet to a lower basin.

Even today, guests to Rome, discover the fountains to be a commanding presence and the awe inspired scenery is particularly breathtaking, particularly the Trevi Fountain. This signaled the end of a building of an aqueduct, built in 19BC, bringing water from the Salone Springs, over 20 KM from Rome. There is a myth connected to this precise fountain, that if you turn your back to the fountain and toss in a coin and it hits in the water, you will come back to Rome but if not, you won't. This, it seems, has survived from the age when legions would make a sacrifice to their gods before going on an expedition into war, which just illustrates how the religious worth of the Roman fountains has not at all been lost in time.

Traveling the Historical Route 66

Nothing represents the American vehicular culture more than the historic Route 66. In its heyday, this highway that stretched from Chicago to Los Angeles was the fastest and most popular year-round connection from the Midwest to the Pacific Coast.

Although the development of multi-lane freeways has made Route 66 largely obsolete, travelers seeking to enjoy a piece of history that reflects a slower pace of American life can still drive most of this highway. High maintenance cost and lack of traffic has resulted in some segments of the highway being torn up and completely decommissioned. Travelers can use a combination of modern freeways and other side streets to bypass areas of Route 66 that no longer exist. Whether you decide to start in the Midwest or on the West Coast, there are a number of must-see destinations along the way.

Near Holbrook and Sun Valley, Arizona, you'll find the Petrified Forest National Park nestled in the Painted Desert. This park is home to one of the world's largest areas of petrified trees. Dating back to the early Triassic period, the petrified trees are bright, colorful, and hard as stone. A number of Native American structures can also be found throughout the park. It is an excellent location to learn more about the Pueblo tribe's rich culture and history.

It's hard to miss Cadillac Ranch if you're approaching Amarillo, Texas on either I-40 or Route 66. This eclectic art installation is a collection of old Cadillacs planted firmly into the Texas soil at an angle that matches the great Giza Pyramid in Egypt. Created by artists in the 1970s, these cars are routinely painted over and over by the various visitors that have come to pay homage to the site. Although located on private property, visitors are encouraged to walk onto the property and leave their mark on the cars. This is the perfect tribute to the aging culture represented by Route 66.

Another must-see destination is the Meramec Caverns near Stanton, Missouri. Hailed as Missouri's buried treasure, the caverns are home to a rich history that extends all the way back to its initial discovery by the French in the early 1700s. The largest claim to fame came in the 1940s, when the land's owner discovered a new area in the caverns that contained a number of artifacts linked to the infamous Jesse James. It has since been dubbed the "Jesse James Hideout." Tours of the massive caves and underground rooms are available nearly all year round.

Whether you're a history buff or just interested in experiencing true American culture, a trip down Route 66 can provide many great memories.

How to Travel on a Budget For Diabetics

I am a type II diabetic and my husband and I are on the road. Being diabetic, I have to watch and evaluate everything I eat. I am pleased to say my blood sugar is staying under control. I like to keep it in the 90s but will settle for the 109 this morning. Be picky about your choice of hotels/motels when traveling. Not all of us can afford to stay in fancy places with gyms and spas. Last night we stayed in a Best Western motel in Springfield, MO. We chose this motel for several reasons including location and price.

But we had lots of options in our price range and location. Specifically, this motel offered a large safe area for walking all on the motel grounds which were very well lit. I was able to walk last night, including to and from the restaurant, and again this morning. This motel also offered free bottled water, a free continental as well as hot breakfast. In addition to the cereals, bagels, and donuts many motels offer, they also had waffles with sugar-free syrup, sausage, egg, and cheese biscuits, boiled eggs, whole wheat toast, and hot biscuits with sausage gravy, fresh fruits, yogurt, etc. Before heading out this morning I was able to have a walk for exercise and a free breakfast that fit into my diet.

One of the things I definitely recommend is picking up the hotel/motel guides that are offered free at gas stations and restaurants along the way. This is how I find my motels. Each motel's ad gives you lots of details. Pay close attention to the breakfast offerings. If they say, "Free Continental Breakfast" your choice is probably limited to cereal, donuts, and bagels. Look for the ones that say, "Free hot breakfast." They are more likely to offer the options of meats and eggs. Feel free to ask about the breakfast offerings before you take a room. Do not be embarrassed to say the breakfast offerings don't meet your dietary needs and move on to another motel down the road. If you make reservations over the internet, the same information is available to you.

There are many good restaurants along the way. Even if you are eating mostly at fast food restaurants, they do offer some healthy choices. Don't use that as an excuse to let your diet suffer. You know how you need to eat and you can do it. And be sure to check your blood sugar on a regular basis, just as you would at home. Make adjustments as necessary.

You can control your blood sugar and travel. Just look for options along the road and choose the best ones. And take advantage of the rest areas all states offer along the interstate. A little walk from time to time allows you to get some much needed exercise and keeps the circulation going in your legs.

Happy Travels.

The city of Athens takes it name from Athena, the Greek Goddess of wisdom and knowledge. It seems only fitting then that is also the city that created democracy and where the great thinkers Plato and Aristotle were born.

Ancient Greece's best known temple 'The Acropolis' is definitely for many people one of the highlights of their holidays in Greece. The Acropolis contains several temples and the most important of these is the Parthenon, which is dedicated to the Goddess Athena. The Ancient Greeks considered Athena to be the protector of Athens and built the Parthenon to commemorate her role in the city.

The site of the Acropolis also contains the Acropolis Museum, which opened in June 2009 and is focused on the items found during the archaeological excavation of the Acropolis. The site houses over 4,000 separate items and was designed by the Swiss architect, Bernard Tschumi, and with modern features such as light sensitive glass and art installations, has come under fire for not keeping with the Doric styling of the old museum. Another controversy surrounding the museum is that of the Elgin Marbles, the new museum has special installation cages set up for their return from the British Museum, although this is not yet guaranteed.

A luxury holiday in Greece requires a luxurious hotel and the Divani Caravel which offers sunset views of the nearby Acropolis is definitely the best in Athens. This luxury hotel in Greece has a scenic rooftop swimming pool, where you can relax on a sun lounger and simply watch the world go by with a refreshing cocktail in your hand.

For the next day of your holiday in Greece head to the Agora region, which used to be the political, administrative and cultural heart of the city. During the heyday of Ancient Greece it was not uncommon for stall holders, philosophers and law makers all to mingle together in this area. The site now houses the Temple of Haephaistos which is thought to be the best preserved ancient temple in the country. However, if you're after a more modern experience on your luxury holiday in Greece then head for lunch at the famous Agora restaurant which is located within the confines of this complex. The restaurant offers traditional Greek dishes, such as Stifado and Moussaka, but is as well-known for its well-mixed cocktails as the delectable food which it offers.

After you've had your fill of Greek food and copious drinks you may feel a little like Dionysus, the Greek god of wine. So why not make the next stop of your holiday in Greece a tour of his theatre? Dionysus was not just the God of wine but also of theatre and agriculture and the large size of the theatre at Dionysus clearly shows the level of importance that the Ancient Greeks placed on forms of entertainment such as the theatre. It was here that the plays of Sophocles, Aristophanes and Euripides were first shown and it would definitely be a tragedy if you missed this incredible attraction whilst on your holidays in Greece.

Tips For Solo Women Travellers

Don't let yourself be put off travelling just because you're a solo woman. Although it pays, as always, to be careful, with a bit of preparation it is safe to travel alone. While it is important to take into consideration the country to which you are travelling - its cultures, its habits, its differences and similarities with your own - there are the top tips in general if you're planning a solo trip.

1) Trust your gut feeling - this is very important. If you get a bad feeling about a place, just leave. If a person is giving you an uneasy feeling, then there is probably a reason for it.

2) Dress appropriately. Research beforehand recommendations for what to wear. There's nothing worse than standing out and in the worst case you can offend people or attract negative attention. If in doubt, dress down rather than up.

3) Split up your cash. Carry only a small amount in your bag and hide the rest either inside a body pouch, or even inside your shoes, socks or bra. One great tip I've heard is to store your cash inside a nearly-empty vitamin bottle. Thieves are not really going to want to steal your Vit C, are they?

4) If talking with strangers, never tell them where you are staying. Your accommodation should be your safe place. If you are nervous about people approaching you, try carrying a photo of a large, intimidating man in your wallet. If people engage you, you can say he is your husband and you are just going to meet him. Other ways to put people off is to tell them you are lawyer or policewoman on holiday.

5) Do not accept drinks or food from strangers. Although most people will be just trying to do you a good turn, the risk of them being spiked is too high.

6) If travelling on public transport, try to stand in the busiest compartment and avoid empty carriages. Keep your luggage in full view. Some countries have introduced women-only carriages. If available, use these.

7) Do not consult a map in public. You are advertising the fact you are a tourist. A better idea is to stop in a restaurant, cafe or museum to check your map - this is much safer.

8) On a similar note, do not flash valuables or money in public. You are asked to get robbed. You could even try roughing up your electronics to make them unappealing targets for thieves.

9) To really blend in, nip into a local shop. Buy something small and use the plastic tag to store your valuables. No would-be thief is going to try to steal your loaf of bread and pint of milk!

10) Do a lot of research beforehand. Seek out local forums online and ask people questions. Ask for tips about restaurants, hotels, dodgy areas, sights and so on as well as local customs. The more preparation you do, the more comfortable you will feel while travelling and this will show. If you are nervous, unsure and totally confused, people will be able to spot it a mile away. A bit of knowledges gives you a confident edge and will keep you safe.

Types of Visa For Visiting the United States

There are different types of visas granted to visitors of the United States. Learn about their differences, and how to apply for one.

The United States is a beautiful country and is among the favorite tourist destinations of many tourists around the world. In addition, the United States is one of the most successful countries in terms of economical growth which have attracted people from other nations to reside or work in this country for better living conditions, and to receive a higher salary.

Millions of people from other countries visit the United States every year for different reasons. They travel to the country as tourists to visit their friends and relatives. Some travel for other reasons such as attending a seminar, conferences, training, medical needs, exchange programs, temporary worker, business meetings or decided to reside in the US.

As a matter of government policy, any foreigner entering into other countries must first secure a visa.. So it is important that you have knowledge on what kind of visa you need to apply for, which depends on the purpose of your trip.

Every year many people from different countries apply for US visas such as visitor visa, work visa and immigration visa. Application for visa includes securing an application form and attending a series of interviews. The US Embassy in the respective countries of the visitor will do necessary counter checking of all data provided through an interagency database. All submitted documents will be verified by the concerned agencies.

Just recently, the United States government has updated the policies in visa applications in order to provide better security for visitors and the American citizens. The evaluation and screening process are stricter in this time of economic recession. Visa application procedures have improved a lot with the implementation of an automated system for faster processing.

US visas are categorized into two; the immigrant visa and the non-immigrant visa.

The immigrant visa is sought by foreigners who have long term plans of permanently residing or working in the United States. However, the applicant should be sponsored by an employer or a relative who is a US citizen before being eligible for an immigrant visa.

This also requires that the petitioner should fill up the Affidavit of Support form which will indicate his financial capability to support the immigrant during his stay in the country. Normally, the process of applying for an immigrant visa can take up as long as two to three years to complete.

With respect to this application, the US government implements an immigration visa lottery in which lucky winners can have the opportunity to be given special privileges in shortening the application process to about two or three months only.

The non-immigrant visas can be applied for a foreigner who intends to stay in the United States for a short period of time. This is a visa that allows a person to stay in the country on a temporary basis.

Non-immigrant visas are commonly applied by tourists, performers, government officials, journalists, trainees, students and temporary workers. It can also be used for other purposes such as for medical treatment and business meetings. For temporary worker visa it is necessary that the petition be first approved by the US immigration including the Naturalization Service before proceeding with the application.

When you have plans in visiting the United States for whatever purpose, it is important to process ahead of time and to comply with all the necessary requirements. This will significantly avoid any delays on your travel. It is important to gather more details to the nearest US Embassy in your country to know the policies concerning your travel.

Visit to Amsterdam Netherlands

The city

Amsterdam is the capital city, the financial and cultural capital as well as the largest city of the Netherlands, located in the province of North Holland in the west of the country. The city has a population of around 1 million, including the suburbs. Its name is derived from Amstel dam, indicative of the city's origin: a dam in the river Amstel where the Dam Square is today. Settled as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important ports in the world during the Dutch Golden Age, a result of its innovative developments in trade. The city was the leading center for finance and diamonds during that time. Amsterdam expanded and many new neighborhoods and suburbs were formed in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The attractions

The city attracts more than 4 million tourist annually with its main attractions being the historic canals, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House, its red-light district and its many cannabis coffee shops and many others.

Amsterdam's Climate

Amsterdam enjoys a cool temperate climate, strongly influenced by its proximity to the North Sea to the west and winter temperatures are mild, seldom below 0°C. Amsterdam nights rarely fall below -5°C because it is surrounded by large bodies of water on three sides and enjoys a significant heat island effect. Summers are moderately warm but rarely hot. The average daily high in August is 22°C, and 30°C or higher is only measured on average on 3 days.Amsterdam has an average annual precipitation of less than 760mm. It is in the form of protracted drizzle or light rain, making cloudy and damp days common during the cooler months, October through March. Only the occasional European windstorm brings significant rain in a short period of time, requiring it to be pumped out to higher ground or to the seas around the city.

The Architecture of Amsterdam

Amsterdam is known for its rich architectural history. The oldest building in Amsterdam is the Oude Kerk (Old Church), at the heart of the Wallen, consecrated in 1306. Amsterdam had a variety of architectural styles influencing their buildings. The focal point of all the architectural styles before the end of the 19th century is the old city center. Most historic buildings in the city center and nearby are houses, such as the famous merchant's houses lining the canals.

Tourism in Amsterdam

Shopping Shops in Amsterdam range from small specialty shops to large department stores such as De Bijenkorf and Maison de Bonneterie, a Parisian style store. In Vondelpark you will find Cornelisz Hooftstraat and Cornelis Schuytstraat where most of Amsterdam's high-end shops are located.Another shopping area is the Negen Straatjes and it differ from other shopping districts because of the presence of a large diversity of privately owned shops. Open-air markets are also widely spread throughout the city, icluding the Albert Cuypmarkt, Westermarkt, Ten Katemarkt, and Dappermarkt.

Transportation in Amsterdam

Bicycles Amsterdam is a bicycle-friendly city and is the center of bicycle culture with many good facilities for cyclists such bike paths and bike racks pervading the city. Bicycle traffic and traffic in general is relatively safe, with only 18 traffic deaths in total for 2007.

Cars In the city center, driving a car is discouraged. Parking fees are expensive, and many streets are closed to cars or are one-way.

Public Transport Public transport in Amsterdam mainly consists of bus and tram lines. Pedestrians and cyclists can take one of the three free ferries to go across the IJ to Amsterdam-Noord or a fare charging ferry to go from the east to the west along the harbor. You can also be transported along Amsterdam's waterways by means of water taxis, a water bus, a boat sharing operation, electric rental boats and canal cruises.

Amsterdam's Culture and Entertainment

Museums The most important museums of Amsterdam are located on het Museumplein (Museum Square), located at the southern side of the Rijksmuseum.

The Rijksmuseum possesses the largest and most important collection of classical Dutch art. With a collection of nearly one million objects.

In front of the Rijksmuseum on the square itself is a long, rectangular, pond that is transformed into an ice rink in winter time. You will also find the the Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum, House of Bols Cocktail & Genever Experience and Coster Diamonds at the Museum Square. The square is almost entirely covered by a lawn, making it the most prominent site in Amsterdam for festivals and outdoor concerts, especially in the summer. Amsterdam contains many other museums throughout the city. They range from small museums such as the Verzetsmuseum, the Anne Frank House, and the Rembrandthuis, to the very large, like the Tropenmuseum, Amsterdams Historisch Museum, and Joods Historisch Museum.

Festivals In the 2008 there were 140 festivals in Amsterdam. The most famous festivals are Koninginnedag (Queen's Day), Amsterdam Gay Pride and the Uitmarkt. Hundreds of thousands of people travel to Amsterdam on Koninginnedag to celebrate with the residents of the city. The entire city becomes overcrowded with people buying products from the freemarket or visiting one of the many music concerts. This festival takes place on the 30th of April each year. During Gay Pride, there is a long parade of boats with floating down Amsterdam's canals, and curious events taking place throughout the city. The Gay Pride annually takes place on the first Saturday in August. The Uitmarkt lasts for three days and it's a cultural event. It consists of many podia with a lot of different artist on them, such as musicians and poets and is held in late August.

Living on a Sailboat in the Caribbean

Living on a sailboat, especially in the Caribbean can be a tremendous amount of fun. In all of our 8 winters we never had a security issue or felt uncomfortable...neither did our cruising buddies. It was and is mostly common sense.

The locals tended to look at cruisers much differently than the cruise ship passengers or guests at the ritzy resorts on their island. There are many reasons for that:

· Cruisers are not in a hurry
· We look alike, find me a cruiser without Teva sandals, I'll show you a rookie
· We take local transportation, buses, 14 passenger vans (maxi taxi)
· We do as the locals do, eat street food, and blend in

The general "rules" we followed in the islands:

· No jewelry
· Wear plastic watches
· Smile...duh
· Be on board at dark
· Wear a fanny pack worn in the front

On the rare occasion you might be out at dusk or dark:

· Go with other cruisers
· Be polite
· Save your heavy partying for the boat

Following these suggestions we never had a problem. But this is no different than what you should do in the US. It is just common sense. Living on a sailboat does not mean shutting off your brain.

I am constantly asked about pirates. Never saw any, never heard of any. Sorry, if piracy is holding you back from living on a sailboat, you'll need another excuse. Think about it...if you were a drug smuggler would you steal a sailboat that goes 5 knots or a cigarette boat that will do 80?

On board the boat, the dinghy was pulled up on davits. This not only made the dinghy harder to steal it eliminated the sounds the water makes when hitting a tethered boat...you don't want to detract from cocktail hour. That's why you are living on a sailboat in the first place...to enjoy yourselves.

Lock your dinghy when going ashore. That will never deter a determined thief with bolt cutters, but it will help. I noticed a lot of cruisers engraved the name of their boat on the dinghy's motor support.

Your attitude is of utmost importance. If you expect something bad to happen it just might happen. On the other hand if you are friendly the natives will respond back to you in kind. I am not talking groveling or being condescending. Just be polite and act like a guest.

Some attitudes to avoid:

· Compare their island to the US
· Point out the poverty you may observe
· Expect things to be done like it is at home

In summation ,living on a sailboat in the Caribbean is a tremendous amount of fun. Use your common sense and it will be as safe as your easy chair back home. Enjoy you lucky people, enjoy.

What is Your Favorite Place to Visit?

It's fun to be retired and travel, and I've seen so many great scenic sites over the years. But, with all the great places to visit on this pale blue dot, what is the most scenic of all? Some say the Swiss Alps, others the Canadian Rockies, others love the Glaciers along the Alaskan Coastline. Yes, all those are incredible indeed, some of the most scenic in the world as far as I can say.

Others love the great lakes, sunny beaches, and others say the beautiful jagged mountains towering above the deserts in the haze of a reddish Sunset. Again, all decent choices and still, for some reason I like hiking in the California Mountains overlooking the coastline, not sure why, but I like jogging on those trails, with a breeze and the view.

When running through the mountains overlooking the beauty of this state, I enjoy the smaller trails, the smaller the trail the better for me, as it makes me feel like I am running faster, and then I love to accelerate up and down the terrain.

Indeed, I also like the blue waters surrounding mountain islands, it's very scenic, this is a cool planet. I'd like to explore more underwater scenery too, it's as if we are all missing something; I feel I am missing something. Yes, I also like the concept of creating a VR world to play in too. Where all the greatest locations of the planet can appear real, while immersed in our world's beauty, please think on this.

15 Tips to Make your Cruise more Enjoyable

A cruising holiday is not everybody's cup of tea, but recently the cruise line industry is reporting huge increases in the amount of visitors.

Cruising can be a mysterious holiday for most first timers and there will be things you either didn't consider or didn't realise. A cruise is a magical vacation idea and we have put a few tips together to make your trip even more magical.

1. Use a professional travel agent for your booking. Preferably a specialist cruise agent. The difference is astounding. They can book everything for you, from shore excursions to when and where you will eat on board.

2. Book a suitable cruise. Do your homework and check that the cruise is suitable for you and your fellow travellers. If you have children make sure the cruise is suitable for kids. If you don't like kids then book a cruise that doesn't cater for them.

3. Cell phones don't work at sea! Take walkie talkies so you can communicate with your travel companions.

4. Eat at the second dinner. Book the second seating for your dinner. This will give you more time for your shore excursions and will mean you aren't rushing back to get dinner.

5. Rent a car. It is often cheaper for a group of people to rent a car instead of paying for shore excursions. Book it in advance so you can just pick it up for the day when you arrive at shore.

6. Request a large table for dining. The cruise line will try and match you up with similar people and you can make some new friends.

7. Take the kids. If you have kids then check the suitability of the cruise before you book. Most have kids clubs and activities as well as baby sitting services. Check that your kids are old enough before you book.

8. In cabin baby sitting is great! Take advantage of it, especially with young kids. It will be the same baby sitter throughout the cruise and they are always professionals who love kids.

9. Eat early. I know that this contradicts the point above. If you have kids you will need to choose the early dinner because kids usually wont wait until 8 o'clock.

10. Buy the drinks bracelet. The drinks will work out cheaper if you buy the bracelet.

11. Don't buy all the photos as soon as you can. There will be a sale of them at the end of the cruise and you will get them much cheaper.

12. Expect to tip. The waiters only make about $35 a week so they need the tips to make up their wages.

13. Get a balcony if you don't like crowds. The ship decks do get quite crowded but a private balcony is a great retreat from the crowds.

14. Read the ships activities every night, you don't want to miss a thing.

15. Dress codes. Obey the dress codes. Most ships do have a dress code even if they don't mention it in the brochure. Take a smart set of clothes just in case.

Cruising is fun and exciting vacation choice. One you will never forget. Follow our advice and cruise your way to the most magical and relaxing vacation you have ever experienced. Have fun and let your every day troubles drift away.
